The display version of Arkibal is a little different from Arkibal Sans family, where “a” is the center of the whole font and the letters “l, b, d, p, q and t” are displayed on a slight angle. The idea was to make two versions with a different selection of letters. This provide a good dynamic and a solid structure.
The inspiration comes from some old documents and store signs from my great-grandfather’s old gold frame factory from 1838. He delivered hits for many artists of that time, and various museums in Copenhagen. It seems it was interesting to try and reproduce some of the old characters and make a new font out of them.
Uppercase “G” was the first letter and is the starting point of the Arkibal Display font. G stands for in danish “Guldramme”, which means “Goldframe”. Arkibal is coming from an almost old danish tradional name “Arkibald”, only without “d”.
