William Caxton was a printer in the city of London beginning around 1476 to his death
in 1491 or 1492. He was a pivotal figure in the development of the English language, being the first to print
books in English. He translated many of the books into English himself and even complained of the fast
changing English language which he helped to stabilize. He had learned the trade of printing in the
Netherlands and this influenced some of his spellings which remain in our language to this day. This
particular face is based on the Typ.6:120G GfT2150 Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke which was used in his 1476 edition of “Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.”
